EPISODE 9 – Nourish: What is Mast Cell Activation & Your Home Might Be Making You Sick
In this second part of the Nourish pillar, we will be taking a deeper dive into the world of Nutritional & Environmental Medicine. While many health practitioners might focus on the symptoms a patient presents, Nutritional and Environmental medicine tries to understand the underlying causes of disease and finds ways to help your body find balance and restoration from within.
In the first half of this episode, we spoke with Dr Christobelle Yeoh, an Integrative & Functional medical practitioner whose work has researched extensively on the topic of nutritional and environmental medicine that can help restore function and optimal health. In our conversation we explore the difference between food allergies and food sensitivities, how long it takes after an exposure to a toxin for a bodily reaction to occur, the relationship between chronic autoimmune diseases and sensitivities and what is the relationship between our genes and mast cell activation?
In the second half of this episode, we explore the impact of environmental influences on the built environment with Nicole Biljsma, a passionate advocate in the world of environmental medicine, with a background in nutrition, naturopathy, and acupuncture. For the past 20 years, Nicole has been helping people in the area of “building biology”, a practice that focuses on the evaluation and control of health hazards created by the built environment. In our conversation, we discuss how our homes might be affecting our health, the impact of asbestos and other toxicants, the world of Home Biology, and what we can do to improve our homes.
