EPISODE 8 – Nourish: Gut Health & Fasting
What does it truly mean to “nourish your body”? In these next two episodes, we will be exploring the concept of nourishment. We won’t be exploring calorie counting and food pyramids, but instead be challenging you to think about how a holistic view of nutritional science and medicine can help aid the prevention of chronic degenerative diseases and co-morbidities.
In the first half of this episode, we speak with Dr. Pran Yoganathan, a gastroenterologist where we explore the idea of whether the gut truly is the second brain? We also discuss the relationship between diet and chronic disease, the role of macronutrients, fat, protein, and carbs in our diet, gut health, and how much protein we actually need as we age.
Plus, would you ever do intermittent fasting? In the second half of this episode, we talk to Grant Schofield, Professor of Public Health at Auckland University of Technology to explore the growing popularity of fasting. In our conversation, we talk about the role of scarcity in ancestral diets, the different kinds of fasting, and the role of fasting in regulating insulin levels.
